Getting to Prayagraj: Your Transport Options

Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is well-connected to the rest of India by rail, road, and air. During the Kumbh Mela, the Indian government significantly expands transport services to handle the enormous influx of pilgrims.

By Train (Recommended)

The most popular way for pilgrims to reach Prayagraj is by train. The city has two major railway stations:

  • Prayagraj Junction (Allahabad Junction) — the primary station, centrally located
  • Prayagraj Rambag — closer to the Mela grounds, used especially during Kumbh

During the Kumbh Mela period, Indian Railways operates thousands of special Kumbh Mela trains from cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Varanasi, Lucknow, and Patna. Book your train tickets months in advance on the IRCTC portal — seats sell out extremely quickly for key bathing dates.

By Air

Prayagraj Airport (Bamrauli Airport) handles domestic flights connecting to Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities. Flight frequency increases during the Kumbh season. From the airport, the Mela grounds are approximately 12–15 km away and accessible by taxi or auto-rickshaw.

By Bus

Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) and private operators run extensive bus services to Prayagraj from:

  • Lucknow (~200 km, approximately 4 hours)
  • Varanasi (~120 km, approximately 2.5 hours)
  • Agra (~400 km, approximately 7 hours)
  • Delhi (~600 km, approximately 10–12 hours)

Special Kumbh Mela bus terminals are set up at multiple entry points to the city during the festival.

By Road (Private Vehicle)

Prayagraj is accessible via National Highway 2 (Delhi–Kolkata highway) and other major roads. However, private vehicles are restricted from entering the core Mela zone during peak bathing dates. Designated vehicle parking zones are set up at the city's periphery, with shuttle services to the ghats.

Accommodation Options at Kumbh Mela

Accommodation at and around the Mela grounds spans a wide range of budgets and comfort levels.

1. Government Tent City (Mela Authority Camps)

The Uttar Pradesh Mela Authority sets up an enormous tent city — effectively a temporary township — on the Mela grounds. These offer basic but functional accommodation with shared toilet facilities. They are among the most affordable options and are managed for safety and cleanliness.

2. Ashram Accommodation

Many religious organizations and ashrams set up large camps at Kumbh, offering accommodation to pilgrims — often at no cost or minimal donation. Expect communal meals (prasad or bhandara), morning prayers, and a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Registration is required and fills up early.

3. Premium & Luxury Tent Resorts

For those seeking comfort, several private operators offer Swiss cottage tents and luxury camps with attached bathrooms, electricity, Wi-Fi, and meals. Prices vary significantly — book well in advance for major bathing dates.

4. Hotels in Prayagraj City

A wide range of hotels — from budget guesthouses to mid-range and premium hotels — are available in Prayagraj city. These are 5–15 km from the Mela grounds. During Kumbh, prices rise sharply. Booking 3–6 months in advance is strongly advised.

Practical Tips for the Journey

  1. Book everything early — trains, accommodation, and buses fill up months before key dates
  2. Carry cash in smaller denominations — ATM queues can be very long at the Mela grounds
  3. Download offline maps of Prayagraj — mobile data can be patchy in dense crowds
  4. Know your camp's sector number and address — the Mela grounds are divided into numbered sectors
  5. Use designated shuttle routes to reach ghats on Shahi Snan days — do not attempt to drive
  6. Stay hydrated — the winter days can be deceivingly dehydrating with long walks and outdoor activity

Getting Around Within the Mela Grounds

The Kumbh Mela grounds span a massive area. Within the grounds, pilgrims can move by:

  • Walking — the primary mode; most pilgrims walk to the ghats
  • Cycle rickshaws and e-rickshaws — available on designated routes
  • Mela authority buses and shuttle services — especially useful for elderly pilgrims
  • Boats — available for navigating the river during non-peak hours

With advance planning, reaching Prayagraj and navigating the Kumbh Mela can be smooth and deeply rewarding.
